Tempe has renovated its City Council Chambers to be more accessible to the public, especially for people with disabilities.

Construction began on the City Council Chambers eight months ago.

Kris Baxter-Ging is a public information officer for the city of Tempe. She says the goal of the project was to make the building as welcoming and inclusive as possible.

“We re-sloped the floor to make it possible for someone in a wheelchair to more easily get to the podium,” Baxter-Ging said.

Other accessibility improvements include large new screens and hearing devices available for those with impairments.

The City council chamber now has seating for 160 people.

The building has three bathrooms, one for men, women and families, and includes adult changing tables.

The renovation was completed at a cost of $3.2 million.
