Starting May 18, drivers, passengers and delivery staff for the ride-share service Uber will see some big changes as the company helps slow the spread of COVID-19.

The app is introducing a new form of facial recognition technology that will require drivers in Arizona to scan their face each time they log in.

The scan will verify they are wearing a mask before it allows them to accept trips.

Passengers are required to wear a face covering at all times, and the company is including a special feedback system for drivers and riders to report if someone isn’t following the guidelines.

Violation could result in loss of access to the app and riders are encouraged to sit in the backseat — meaning oftentimes, groups of three or more may have to order a separate ride.
