More Arizonans are wearing seat belts. That’s according to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Arizona is now on par with the nationwide rate of 90.7%.

NHTSA reports that Arizona’s seat-belt use rate in 2019 was 90.6%. It’s the highest recorded since the federal agency established uniform criteria for observational surveys nearly 10 years ago. That’s when Arizona’s rate was 82.2%. 

Twenty six states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Northern Mariana Islands marked rates of 90% or higher. The lowest rate recorded last year was 70.7% in New Hampshire, while the highest rate was 97.1% in Hawaii. 

In April, NHTSA published seat-belt use rates for states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, other U.S. territories and nationwide from 2012-2019.
