Severe storms hit Gila Bend hard on Aug. 13, 2021.

Severe storms hit Gila Bend hard over the weekend from Friday night through Saturday morning.

State and local officials are responding to the damage caused by severe flooding while preparing for more rain.

Two lives were lost while more than 130 homes and 17 businesses were damaged by the weekend storms.

The county opened an emergency operations center, and the board of supervisors declared a local emergency to funnel resources to the flooding.

Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management spokesperson Ron Coleman said the flood control district is sending technical experts to assess the levees and washes in the area ahead of more rain expected this week, "to see if there’s any immediate actions that need to be taken, to help prevent any additional flooding.”

Maricopa County Department of Transportation crews have been clearing debris from the roads, and the Department of Emergency Management sent more than 80 tons of sand and gravel for sandbagging and repairing water and sewer lines.
