The CDC is investigating two salmonella outbreaks linked to Italian-style meats like salami and prosciutto, and Arizona ranks among the states hardest hit.

The agency reports 36 cases of the bacteria-caused sickness among people in 17 states.

A dozen have been hospitalized.

In Arizona, five have been sickened, second only to California's seven.

The true tally is likely higher, since many recover on their own from the typical diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps without receiving treatment or testing.

The timing of salmonella, which can take hours, days or weeks to develop, also can make it hard to identify.

The CDC is advising people to not eat Fratelli Beretta brand prepackaged uncured antipasto trays. Trays can include uncured salami, prosciutto, coppa or soppressata. They were sold nationwide and have “best by” dates on or before Feb. 11, 2022.
