Fifty-two percent of Phoenix workers feel underpaid, according to consulting firm Robert Half's 2022 salary guide, which lists pay for more than 500 positions across various industries. Phoenix ties for 9th with Austin and Denver among 28 cities listed. Charlotte had the most employees who feel underpaid at 62%.

Nationally, 31% of workers surveyed said they would consider quitting if they don’t get a raise by the end of the year. In Phoenix, it's 43%, the highest among cities listed.

The survey finds starting compensation for professional occupations is expected to increase 3.8% overall next year with high-demand jobs seeing a bigger bump.

“Job openings are at a record high, and workers with in-demand skills have more negotiating power,” Paul McDonald, senior executive director said in a news release. “In this tight labor market, increasing salaries is table stakes for employers. Companies must regularly revisit pay ranges and discuss career paths with employees to align on expectations.”

The report also says flexible schedules and remote work options have become priorities for many employees. Seventy-five percent of those surveyed want to work remotely at least part of the time and 34% who are currently working remotely reported they will not stay with companies that don’t allow remote work.
