The Tempe City Council is scheduled to hold its first public hearing Thursday night on a new ballpark lease for long-time Cactus League tenant the Los Angeles Angels.

Final approval by the council in November would commit the city to spending about $41 million on renovating Diablo Stadium.

The deal could keep the Angels playing spring training games in Tempe into the mid-2040s. It calls for the Angels to put $10 million toward a multistory building for the franchise to use.

Tempe would pay for just over half of the project, plus finance a new outfield concourse for fans.

The city would get yearly rent from the Angels. The fee starts at a half-million dollars and rises for inflation. Plus the Major League Baseball club would pay Tempe 20% of ticket sales.

Diablo Stadium is the oldest Cactus League ballpark. The Angels have played there since the early 1990s.
