The Tempe Police Department has recommended charges against former Arizona Department of Corrections Director Charles Ryan after an incident at his home earlier this month.

Ryan was arrested after a brief armed standoff and will face two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer and one count of unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Ryan suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the hand before the impasse and was hospitalized, but no other injuries were reported.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will now review the case.
