Workers at two local Starbucks stores have voted to form a union, according to the National Labor Relations Board.

Labor organizers say the outcomes double the number of metro-area Starbucks that have recently unionized.

The most recent Starbucks locations to unionize are in north Phoenix and Avondale.

Shift supervisor Bill Whitmire is a union organizer at a Starbucks in north Scottsdale, where the outcome of a vote on unionization remains in question. Whitmire said issues with scheduling, pandemic safety and pay drove workers to organize.

“We wanted more protection in our job cause pretty much Starbucks can do anything they want to, to a worker,” he said.

Starbucks did not respond to a request for comment.

In April, the National Labor Relations Board accused Starbucks of retaliation against workers serving on a union organizing committee.
