In conjunction with county and federal law enforcement agencies, the Phoenix Police Department launched a pilot program to curb gun violence in the city.

The department said firearm homicides are up 45% in Phoenix year over year. The new initiative assigns 10 detectives to precincts with the most gun-related crimes.

Sgt. Philip Krynsky said the program is designed to increase intelligence and communication between agencies.

“What we want to do is focus on these dangerous felonies that happen." Krynsky said. "Because most of these crimes that are occurring — it’s a few individuals that create the majority of the crime, and that’s what we want to focus on [with] these quality arrests.”

Krynsky emphasized that tips from the community are crucial for the operation. To report suspicious gun-related activity, community members can call the tip line at 602-644-5805.
