Laws pertaining to vehicle window tinting vary by state, with some having more restrictions than others. Through KJZZ’s Q&AZ project, a listener asked: How dark can Arizona drivers tint their car windows?

In Arizona, there are three different stipulations for tinting car windows. Non-reflective tinting is allowed on the upper stripe of the windshield, a section known as the AS-1 line that is marked by lines on either side. 

Front seat side windows can be tinted up to 33%, meaning at least 33% of light is let in. There are no restrictions for the back seat side windows or the rear window.

The Department of Public Safety says drivers are most likely to be pulled over for front windows that are too dark or windshield tinting that goes below the AS-1 line. Drivers may receive a repair order or even a citation for unlawful tinting.
