Here's how to get a free ticket to Metrocenter Mall's farewell party on May 21
A special viewing of the 1989 movie, “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” will be held at the former Metrocenter Mall in Phoenix during. That’s one of several Valley locations where the movie, starring Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves, was partially filmed
A year after the Tempe Circle K featured in "Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure" closed, Phoenix will say a final farewell to Metrocenter. For $5, fans can watch the comedy inside Harkins Theatres at 35th and Dunlap avenues while outside people can enjoy music, kids’ activities and a 1980s costume contest.
Councilwoman Ann O’Brien, whose district includes Metrocenter, is hosting the event on Sunday afternoon, May 21. The city is also creating a commemorative T-shirt as a fundraiser for Phoenix Children's Hospital; the shirts can be purchased when reserving a spot to the event.
“I’m sure a lot of us have our own Metrocenter Mall memories,” she said. “For me, it could be one of my many shifts working at Parklane Hosiery, or how every time I heard the sirens of a fire truck, I would scatter so my dad never found out I was out cruising with the boys from my class!”
When it opened in 1973, Metrocenter was the first mall west of the Mississippi to have five department stores. The mall officially closed in June 2020. Demolition will begin this summer as construction begins on a self-contained village with multifamily housing, retail, restaurant and a park.
