Glendale has had a landscape rebate program since the 1980s.

The city just raised the amount of money water customers can have refunded if they switch from grass to desert landscape — and added new rebates for some washing machines and toilets that save water.

The overhaul means Glendale will share the expense to cut outdoor water usage, said Environmental Programs Administrator Joanne Toms.

“So, we want our customers to save. But cost is sometimes a concern and so this is the city saying, ‘Hey, we hear you.”

Glendale residents wanting to keep a grass lawn can still get a rebate for installing irrigation-control technology.

WaterSense toilets and Energy Star laundry machines are also now partial-refund-eligible purchases. The labels are given to high-efficiency products by the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Although the rebates don’t cover the entire cost, they cover almost half of the cost, at least for a lot of the products,” said Toms.
