The chemical manufacturer 3M has agreed to pay billions of dollars to settle lawsuits over contamination in public drinking water systems with substances called PFAS.

But Arizona’s Kris Mayes is among more than 20 attorneys general who want a federal judge in South Carolina to nix the deal.

Mayes has sued 3M and other companies that produce PFAS, which break down slowly, can build up in peoples' bodies over time and have been linked to cancer.

Mayes also pushed the federal government to adopt new rules for keeping PFAS out of drinking water.

Now, Mayes wants 3M’s proposed settlement of a class-action lawsuit rejected.

In a news release, she calls the offer worth as much as $12.5 billion inadequate and not a serious proposal.

Mayes says it’s not enough money for public water providers to deal with PFAS, and they might have to pay 3M back for future costs.
