The state of Arizona is pulling the license of a group home operator out of concern for the safety of the foster children who lived there. The Department of Child Safety said taking such action has been a rare event in recent years, but the alleged violations committed by Golden State Human Development, which runs four homes, fit the bill.

"There were Issues with taking care of medications, transporting children inappropriately, not having a proper criminal verification background check done on certain staff," Doug Nick with DCS said. "It’s a fairly serious situation.”

Law enforcement agencies were dispatched to two of Golden State’s homes more than 170 times between January and July.

Altogether, Golden State was licensed to house up to 35 children. Nick said all have been removed, but the company is entitled to an appeal.

More than 17,000 children are in foster care in Arizona. Of those, about 1,700 children are in group homes.
