How ChatGPT helped an Iowa school district ban books — and what it could mean for Arizona

A school district in Iowa removed more than a dozen books from school libraries — because ChatGPT said they contained depictions of sex acts, which Iowa law prohibits in school libraries.

It’s believed to be the first time a district has used artificial intelligence to determine titles that should be taken off shelves.

For reaction to this novel approach, The Show reached out to Jean Kilker, a teacher-librarian and chair of the Teacher-Librarian Division of the Arizona Library Association, to discuss what she makes of this Iowa district using AI to figure our which books shouldn't be on the shelves.
