A change in federal election laws has some concerned that any recounts in Arizona could prevent the state from having final results by the national deadline.

That deadline is Dec. 11 for the 2024 election, and the state’s electoral canvass is Dec. 2. But if the presidential election is as close as 2020, recounts could make Arizona miss the mark.

Arizona Association of Counties lobbyist Jennifer Marson said, "As election officials started to look to build the calendar for the future year, they realized, oh my goodness, we are potentially walking into a buzz saw.”

A spokesperson for Secretary of State Adrian Fontes says the deadlines could require changes in state laws. But, getting enough support from both political parties could prove challenging.
