Two political groups want a judge to exempt them from a new Arizona law requiring the disclosure of certain donor names after a failed attempt to void the statute earlier this year.

By a 3-to-1 margin, voters in 2022 approved the law that says any organization spending at least $50,000 on state races must disclose donors who gave $5,000 or more.

In June, a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge ruled there is nothing unconstitutional about the law. But he said the Arizona Free Enterprise Club and Center for Arizona Policy could file for exemption.

That would require proof of reasonable likelihood that donors would face harassment or threats by having their names revealed.

Attorney Scott Freeman claims the law restricts the groups’ ability to speak freely and disturbs their private affairs.

No date has been set for a hearing.
