Several schools in the Paradise Valley Unified School District are at risk of closing due to declining enrollment.

The district superintendent put together a committee of stakeholders to review enrollment trends. Members were then asked to make recommendations for efficient use of district buildings and boundaries.

The committee has recommended that the school board close Hidden Hills Elementary School, Sunset Canyon Elementary School, Desert Springs Preparatory Elementary and Vista Verde Middle School.

Board member Anne Greenberg said she understands there are concerns among parents.

“We have heard from people time and again you know ‘don’t break up my community’ and that’s not what we are trying to do," Greenberg said. "But unfortunately, with declines, which is not unique to PV, you have to make the harder choices.”

District Governing Board President Nancy Case said demographics in the area have changed and she’s seen it in her own neighborhood.

“I had seven children attend our schools and I still live in the same house," Case said. "Across the street had two, they had two, they had four, they all live in the same houses. They all went through our schools, but no children live in those houses now.”

Two other schools could see boundary changes. The district has scheduled public forums throughout the month of January for community members to give feedback on the proposed changes.
