The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued a high pollution advisory for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

For especially midnight to noon on New Year’s Day smoke levels are expected to be high and unhealthy.

ADEQ meteorologist Matt Pace says there’s been only three instances in the last decade where Phoenix’s smoke levels haven’t exceeded the health standard around this time.

Arizona state law allows for seasonal sale and use of certain types of fireworks, such as ground-based spinners and fountains.

“We do ask you to not burn wood, instead switch to propane or natural gas. And then ground-based fireworks are legal, however they do contribute a huge part to the smoke levels in the Valley especially on New Year’s Day that does result in very unhealthy levels," Pace said.

Pace advised everyone to limit outdoor activity and shut windows. For those sensitive to smoke, limit indoor activity as well. Possible rain may clear out the smoke on Tuesday.
