A Phoenix pastor is preparing to welcome what could be an influx of migrants crossing the border this week. The Lukeville Port of Entry in southern Arizona reopened last week after about a monthlong closure.

Angel Campos is a pastor at Monte Vista Baptist Church in Phoenix. He’s provided a pitstop with water, food, clothing and showers for migrants legally entering the U.S. from Mexico since 2019.

Campos didn’t see as many migrants come through his doors over the past month, but he usually serves about 100 per day Monday through Thursday.

He was a migrant himself when he came to the states with his family in 1996.

“Now I’m a U.S. citizen, and I’m helping these immigrants," Campos said. "I’m very happy to do so. It’s very nice to be able to give back a little bit of the love.”

Campos gets a list of names directly from ICE one day before they arrive at his church.

After taking some time to rest, the migrants he helps get rides to the airport and continue their journeys to other states.
