Last month, the Chandler City Council approved agreements to place school resource officers at all public high schools and middle schools within city limits through June 2026.

At a meeting of Chandler’s governing board Wednesday, officer Stephen Dieu shed some light on what they will be doing at their assigned schools.

He said SROs undergo several trainings to help them make a positive impact on their campuses and prepare them for a school environment.

The Arizona Department of Education allocated about $5.3 million for 12 school resource officers over the next three years.

“You’ve heard of youth mental health first aid," Dieu said. "We also certify our officers as youth mental health first-aiders. We go through additional training — solo engagement training which is active shooter training and how to respond when you are the only one on scene."

Officers are also trained on how to work with students who have emotional or developmental disabilities.

Chandler SROs will also teach 80 to 100 hours of Law Related Education (LRE), which encourages students to be law-abiding citizens and discourages violence. Dieu said the curriculum for that is different for each school.

“It starts with a needs assessment that’s completed by reviewing available data," he said. "Are they having issues with vapes, are they having issues with cyber bullying or things like that?”
