The Phoenix director of the civilian office for police oversight is quitting after a little more than two years on the job.

A city spokesperson says officials will work diligently to find the right leader for the Office of Accountability and Transparency.

The Phoenix office Roger Smith is leaving was established before the U.S. Justice Department announced a sweeping review of the city and its Police Department.

But Smith came to Phoenix after the feds revealed their investigation.

Smith led the professional standards office for police in Cleveland and was counsel for New York City’s civilian review board.

Arizona lawmakers moved to pack oversight agencies with police after Smith took charge of the Phoenix office.

The city chose to not make a court challenge.

And the office now monitors the police department’s own internal reviews.

Smith’s last day is next week.
