Some Gilbert residents are calling for the resignation of both the mayor and police chief over the town’s handling of teen violence.

At a council meeting this week, residents accused Gilbert officials of acting too slow to curb teen-on-teen attacks happening for more than a year. 

Kristine Brennan was among those calling for Mayor Brigette Peterson to resign. 

“Acknowledge that you are a leader that just doesn’t care. Who is trying to quiet dissent and who doesn’t want to deal with any of this, and who hasn’t dealt with any of this," Brennan said. 

An assistant chief of police says the teen violence issue remains a priority. A string of arrests have been made by police in Gilbert, Mesa and Pinal County in recent weeks in relation to the high school gang that called themselves the “Gilbert Goons.”

Peterson ended her re-election campaign last month.
