Attorney General Kris Mayes said her office will make an announcement soon on the investigation into the fake electors who sought to undermine the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Mayes previously confirmed she is investigating a collection of Republicans who signed a document sent to the National Archives that falsely claimed Arizona voters elected Donald Trump in 2020. Two of the people who signed the document, Sens. Jake Hoffman (R-Queen Creek) and Anthony Kern (R-Glendale), currently serve in the state Legislature.

Mayes has received some criticism for the slow pace of the investigation as the country prepares for another presidential election in which Trump will likely again face President Joe Biden.

“We will announce something in the relatively near future,” Mayes said.

Last year, Michigan’s Attorney General last year charged 16 people involved in a similar scheme in that state, and another six people were indicted in Nevada.

Mayes said she understood the criticism about the pace of her own investigation, but noted that she took office in 2022, well after other officials who are investigating fake elector schemes in other states.

“We’re trying to … conduct an investigation that is serious and professional, while understanding that we’re in an election year and we can’t take all the time in the world,” Mayes said.
