A bill that would limit what zoning rules cities can set for single-family homes is a vote away from the governor’s desk.

Lawmakers say the bill aims to address the lack of affordable housing.

The bill would allow for homes as small as 600 square feet to be built on a 1,500 foot lot.

Municipalities would be barred from adopting rules mandating specific design or aesthetic elements for new homes. They would also not be permitted to require homeowner associations. 

As it stands, only cities of at least 70,000 people would be affected.

Many lawmakers from both parties claim the lack of affordable housing has come from city-adopted zoning regulations that hinder construction of smaller homes.
