Arizona 'fake electors' investigation: Grand jury subpoenas issued
Prosecutors with Attorney General Kris Mayes’ office issued grand jury subpoenas in connection with their investigation of a group of Arizona Republicans who sought to undermine the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Politico first reported that subpoenas were issued to individuals close to former President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign.
Mayes’ has been investigating fake electors who signed a document sent to Washington that falsely claimed Arizona voters elected Trump, not President Joe Biden, by popular vote in 2020. Prosecutors in Georgia, Michigan and Nevada have brought charges against individuals accused of participating in similar schemes in those states.
Former Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward and two sitting state senators, Jake Hoffman and Anthony Kern, were among Arizona’s 11 fake electors. The Washington Post reported that the electors were among the individuals subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury.
On Thursday, Kern declined to say whether he received a subpoena.
“No, no, no, no, no,” Kern said.
He would not clarify if he was denying that he received a subpoena or declining to answer the question.
“No, no, no, no,” Kern said. “You can decipher that the way you want.”
Hoffman did not respond to a request for comment.
Last week, Mayes said an update in that case would come in “relatively near future.”
On Thursday, the Attorney General’s Office declined to comment.
