A record number of refugees came to Arizona last year, and data show the state is on pace for a nearly 50% increase in arrivals this year.

Now, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services says efforts are underway to streamline work permits for people who were forced to flee their home country.

Federal law says refugees can work as soon as they reach the United States. But it often takes months to get proof from the government that they’re eligible.

Federal officials say a new streamlined process will cut the wait time to about 30 days for refugees to get work permits. Key to speeding up the process is no longer making refugees apply for something they’re already granted by law.

Officials are also adding a digital form to replace the old paper-based system for work permits.

Plans are to start the process as soon as refugees get to the U.S.

Data show Arizona is on pace to take in nearly 9,000 refugees this year.
