The Arizona Senate has passed a bill that would make it illegal to spread deep-fake video or audio recordings that depict people without their consent.

The bill would make doing so a Class 6 felony if depicted individuals are clearly identifiable or are engaged in a sexual act.

It would also make it a Class 4 felony in other cases, such as if the depicted person is hurt financially, if the deep fake is posted on a website, or is used for harassment.

Both felony classes could result in prison time.

The Legislature has been working on multiple bills focusing on AI. Another Senate measure would make it illegal to distribute AI generated deep fakes of political candidates without disclosure.

Both bills are now in the House of Representatives.
