Maricopa County has lost its seat as the fastest-growing county in the United States.

It dropped to No. 4 in the latest Census Bureau rankings.

Maricopa County has a history of seeing the highest total growth in the U.S.

But from July 2022 to July 2023, it added 30,038 residents. That is just over half the amount of the previous year.

Across the nation, more counties last year saw growth than in previous years, especially in areas like the Midwest that saw more outward migration during the pandemic.

Domestic migration has fueled growth in Arizona, especially in Pinal County which had the seventh-highest net gain in the country.

Large metro areas such as Los Angeles County in California and Kings County in New York had some of the biggest losses.
