Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes on Wednesday issued a consumer alert about so-called “crisis pregnancy centers.” She said the facilities often lack a medical license and use misleading tactics to discourage women from seeking abortions. Now, Republican lawmakers are calling on Mayes to retract the alert.

In a press conference at the state Capitol on Thursday, Rep. Neal Carter said Mayes did not give any examples of Arizona pregnancy centers doing anything illegal.

"The attorney general is abusing her statutory authority and engaging in a political stunt designed to encourage frivolous complaints against pregnancy centers," Carter said.

Carter and other Republicans argued that crisis pregnancy centers provide important free services to Arizona mothers and babies.
