A University of Arizona researcher received $750,000 from the National Institutes of Health to help prevent nurses from developing work-related asthma.

Researcher Amanda Wilson said nurses’ increased use of cleaning and disinfecting products introduces a kind of trade off: It lowers the chance of contracting disease, but raises the risk of work-related breathing problems.

“There’s around 40 years of evidence showing different relationships between increased cleaning and disinfection activity and increased risk of certain asthma-related outcomes,” said Wilson.

According to Wilson, she’ll use the grant to help develop cleaning and disinfecting methods that better balance those risks.
