After Arizona’s Supreme Court this week said a near-total abortion ban should take effect in the state, political groups looking to expand abortion access are reporting an increase in support.

The group Arizona for Abortion Access is gathering signatures to get a measure on ballots this year to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution. A spokesperson told KJZZ News the group has seen a jump in donations, volunteer sign-ups and website traffic this week.

The progressive grassroots group Indivisible is working with that campaign.

Indivisible managing director Mari Urbina told KJZZ News she has also seen a spike in volunteers for Indivisible’s canvassing program in Arizona.

"We saw within the first 24-hour period following the decision, a 50% increase in sign-ups. That amounts to 350 Arizonans across 61 cities in the state," Urbina said. 

Arizona for Abortion Access organizers have until July 3 to submit 383,923 signatures from registered Arizona voters to the secretary of state to qualify for the ballot. They report they already have more than enough, but will keep circulating their petition until the deadline.
