The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded nearly $55 million in additional border-related funds to two Arizona counties and two organizations.

In a statement, U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly said the additional Shelter and Services Program funds will help Arizona border nonprofits and county operations stay open for business. And in doing so, prevent migrants who come to the border seeking asylum — and having nowhere else to go — from being released on the streets in Arizona communities.

In Pima County, officials say the new wave of funds should allow them to continue providing shelter services for migrants through the end of the year.

Maricopa County will also receive a portion of the funds, as will the World Hunger Organization in both Maricopa and Yuma counties.
