Arizona Supreme Court denies attorney general's motion to reconsider abortion ruling

Arizona’s Supreme Court will not reconsider its ruling from earlier this month that reinstated a near-total abortion ban in the state.
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes on Tuesday had filed a Motion for Reconsideration in the abortion laws case. Her attorneys argued that portions of the Supreme Court’s ruling in that case were erroneous. They said justices had jumped to conclusions about what legislators intended when they wrote the state’s 15-week abortion law in 2022. And they said justices should have upheld that law, rather than the near-total ban from the 1860s.
The state Supreme Court on Friday responded to the 32-page motion with a one-sentence decision to deny it.
The near-total abortion ban could go into effect in Arizona in early June.
The state Legislature has advanced a bill to repeal the 1864 law. The state Senate could vote on the repeal as early as Wednesday. If the repeal passes, it would not take effect until 90 days after the end of the legislative session, which could fall in August or September.
