The Arizona Legislature is considering a measure that would require certain cities to allow homeowners to build accessory dwelling units, sometimes called casitas.

While it’s intended to improve the state’s housing supply, some city leaders, including Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega, see this bill as a problematic invitation for more short-term rentals.

“Totally irresponsible on the Legislature agenda, and our council stands against that. But it is pending, so just to give you an idea of how destructive that could be, it would literally double the amount of STRs (short-term rentals)," Ortega said.

The League of Arizona Cities and Towns opposes the bill, too, and calls for an amendment to exclude short-term rentals.

The bill has already passed the Senate.
