Deer Valley Unified School District officials say results from Tuesday’s override election are still too close to call.

Deer Valley serves about 35,000 K-12 students and stretches from the northern Maricopa County line south to Bell Road. 

Wednesday results from the Maricopa County Recorder show there are 414 more votes against the override with all precincts reporting. This is a slight decrease from the 540-vote difference reported Tuesday night.

If the override fails, the District faces $16.5 million in cuts over several years as an old override expires. If it passed, the new override would increase funding to $24.75 million each year for the next five years.

The District is waiting for an official vote count before commenting on the results, said Monica Allread, director of communications and community engagement for Deer Valley.

“We know there are many provisional ballots that need to be counted over the next few days,” Allread said.

Final election results could be posted as early as Friday, according to the Maricopa County Recorder. There are a total of about 33,800 ballots still left to be processed, the County Recorder said Wednesday.

The Deer Valley governing board has not said what services may be cut if the override fails, Allread said.

If it passed, money would help do things like maintain class sizes, recruit and keep teachers, give dedicated funding for full-day kindergarten and transportation, support fine arts programs, physical education, gifted services, language immersion and international baccalaureate.
