Arizona’s senior senator and former Republican presidential nominee said he’s not hopeful for his party’s chances to regain the White House.

McCain, who is running for re-election, said he needs the time in July to campaign before the primary. Yet he’s clearly pessimistic about what may come out of the gathering.

“I am at a loss. I do not know what’s going to happen. And I just don’t see that a lot of it is going to turn out well because there are too many divisions within our party," McCain said.

McCain, who’s been openly critical Donald Trump’s strong rhetoric and once referred to his Senate colleague Ted Cruz, as a “wacko bird,” still won’t say who he prefers as the GOP nominee.

But he does not believe the party can repair its fractures in time to win the White House.
