The ACLU held a community forum updating the community about their lawsuit against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on June 9, 2016.

The American Civil Liberties Union sued Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio several years ago for racial profiling. On Thursday, they updated the community about the lawsuit's status in Downtown Phoenix.

More than 50 residents who had questions about the case came out to the forum.

Some asked about the legal process, while others wanted to know about justice for those profiled or hurt by a sheriff’s deputy.

One person asked about Native Americans who had also been targeted, to which ACLU attorneys expressed remorse about not including them in the original filing.

ACLU director Alessandra Soler says the point was to keep the community engaged; “That was the message we wanted to get out, try not to lose hope because justice takes a really long time.”

Cecilia Martinez, who came out to the forum with her two young children, got her questions answered about her husband who was picked up by MCSO officers in a raid.

They were victims of Arpaio, she says, and her husband was arrested, but he got out of jail with a lawyer's help.

Parties in the lawsuit are working out a way to compensate those victims who were wrongfully detained.
