A large concrete girder collapsed at the Bell Road and Grand Avenue construction site in Surprise.

Arizona Department of Transportation is still investigating what caused a girder to collapse and injure two construction workers last week in Surprise.

One of the workers was in critical condition Friday. Surprise fire officials say it looks like the outcome will be positive after surgery to treat injuries from a 40-foot fall.

He fell when a 60,000 pound concrete girder collapsed after being placed on overpass construction at Bell Road and Grand Avenue.

ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel said work has resumed on parts of the project while ADOT investigates what caused the incident.

“Safety remains at the forefront here, but the project team is able to continue work, other work on the project, because we’re really going to be working on keeping things on schedule,” he said.

That construction will be utility relocation and improvements on Grand Avenue.
