The restaurant company P.F. Chang's says data from credit and debit cards used at its restaurants were stolen. The Scottsdale-based restaurant chain is working with the federal government to investigate the problem.

In a written statement, P.F. Chang's says it's working with the United States Secret Service and forensic experts to determine how badly its data security has been breached. On Tuesday, the Secret Service informed the company of the problem. By the end of the week, the restaurant informed customers to track their financial statements for fraudulent activities.

P.F. Chang's is investigating how many customers and which U.S. restaurants have been impacted.

Cody Cornell, a cybersecurity consultant in Tempe, said this breach and other recent security problems illustrates the dilemma consumers face.

"As we're going to be doing things that are convenient to us as a consumer, there's some risk associated with that," Cornell said. "That being said, there's definitely some expectations that we should have about the people that manage our data -- a level of due diligence associated with the protection that they're putting in place."

For now, P.F. Chang's is using a manual card imprint system at its U.S. restaurants.
