Peoria Police Department Issues Body Cameras For Every Officer
Peoria Police Department has been testing a body camera program for the past year. The city will now issue a camera to every officer in the field.
About half of the Peoria police force was already wearing the body cameras for a year as part of a pilot program.
Now, about 100 officers will wear the Taser-brand body cameras, which cost the department about $400 each and were funded primarily through a grant.
Peoria police spokesman Brandon Sheffert said rolling out the body cameras for every officer can only help community relations.
“I think the expectation from the community nowadays is to have that transparency, but it definitely does help to show what we’re doing, not only the good, but things we can improve on as well.”
Officers will not be able to delete or edit footage, and Sheffert said the department will pay a monthly fee for storing the video data.
