Arizona Public Service (APS) has reached a milestone of more than a gigawatt of solar energy installed. According to APS, that’s enough to meet the partial daytime needs of about 250,000 homes.

APS becomes the only utility outside of California to have that much solar capacity.

About half of the utility’s solar energy comes from large-scale solar farms and the other half from residential systems installed on customers’ homes.

There are currently about 40,000 rooftop solar systems in APS territory, and the number continues to grow. That rapid penetration has fueled debate between the solar industry and utilities about how to bill those who produce their own power.

APS reimburses solar customers at retail rates for their excess power, but in its rate case has proposed eventually shifting new customers to a much lower rate.
