More than 200 personnel fighting wildfire near Nogales

May 22, 2013

Firefighters continue to battle a suspected human-caused wildfire that has charred more than 3,800 acres in the Coronado National Forest, east of Nogales.

Spokeswoman Michelle Fiddler says the Soldier Basin Fire is now 8 percent contained. Fiddler says workers are battling fire with fire, and the burnouts will eventually help them confine the flames.

"As the fire starts to gradually move closer to those prepared lines, firefighters are going to use some hand-ignitions to burn along the fire lines, try to bring the fire back to the main body of the fire which will assist in helping contain the fire," Fiddler said.

Fiddler says more than 200 personnel are on the fire supported by 12 engines and two helicopters.
