More Than 10,000 Attend Hillary Clinton Rally At ASU
Hillary Clinton spoke at Arizona State University’s campus last night and encouraged thousands of supporters to get out the vote. This is the first time a presidential candidate has visited Arizona during the general election since 2004.
Clinton was introduced by a Latino immigrant family whose son was killed serving in Iraq and only became a citizen after his death. She said she would push for immigration reform with a path to citizenship. She criticized Donald Trump’s plan to deport millions of immigrants.
Clinton needled Trump for his association with Sheriff Joe Arpaio, calling the sheriff Trump's "top immigration advisor." She asked the audience to imagine Donald Trump appointing the sheriff as the next Secretary of Homeland Security to oversee a massive deportation force.
There were also a few protests at the rally. During Clinton's speech, some Trump supporters chanted “lock her up” from outside the security gates. Opponents of the Dakota Access Pipeline were also there with signs demanding a more concrete position from the candidate.
Clinton wrapped up after speaking for about 45 minutes. Mehrdad Dariush left the speech inspired.
"She is just such a wonderful speaker," he said. "She has a great vision for this country."
Nagia Haddock of Ahwatukee said while she was disappointed Clinton didn't discuss her plans regarding the Affordable Care Act, she too left the field inspired.
"She was very personable and I was surprised by that," Haddock said. "She was very relaxed and not scripted."
The visit to ASU, with just under a week before Election Day, was a nod to Arizona's new found status as a potential swing state. The last time a Democrat won Arizona was when Clinton’s husband Bill won re-election in 1996.
