Among the Maricopa County races, local school funding was up for vote election night and a majority of voters showed their support.

Voters passed almost all of the 20 bonds and overrides up for vote, resulting in millions of additional funding for public schools. Most of the money goes to infrastructure, transportation and school program costs.

Gila Bend, Queen Creek and Peoria unified school districts did not pass budget increases. 

Voters handily defeated Peoria Unified School District’s $198 million bond. Peoria schools did pass an override last year to help pay for building maintenance and technology.

This year, a large part of the bond would have gone to a new elementary and high school in the northern part of the district.

Peoria Unified spokeswoman Danielle Airey said the district will regroup and decide on a plan to address overcrowding in the growing northern area.

“That’s something that has been on our radar for some time, knowing that northern Peoria has just experienced really explosive growth," Airey said.

Airey said there won’t be direct cuts initially, but a committee has been formed to look at larger class sizes in north Peoria.

The bond for Western Maricopa Education Center, a vocational district, is still too close to call, but is trending toward defeat.
