The fall of 2009 saw the death of three people outside of Sedona in a sweat-lodge ceremony.

James Shore, Liz Neuman and Kirby Brown were overcome by the heat in the lodge, which was run by James Arthur Ray, a motivational speaker and author. Ray ended up behind bars for two years on negligent homicide charges.

The events of that day and Ray’s career are recounted in an upcoming CNN documentary called "Enlighten Us: The Rise and Fall of James Arthur Ray."

To learn more, we spoke with author and historian Mitch Horowitz, who appears in the documentary.
