Maricopa County Attorney's Office Quietly Closes Criminal Probe Into Horne
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has quietly closed a criminal probe into former Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne on whether he illegally used office staff on a 2014 re-election campaign.
Horne will not face criminal charges, as confirmed by a County Attorney's Office spokesperson. Prosecutors decided earlier this year there was no reasonable likelihood of convicting Horne on felony charges, and the statute of limitations on misdemeanor charges had passed.
The probe was launched after a Horne staffer claimed that most of her work was for his campaign.
Horne denied the allegations and criticized the County Attorney’s Office for failing to publicly clear him.
He settled a civil investigation by the Arizona Clean Elections Commission on allegations he used office staff for his re-election by paying $10,000 of his own money.
