The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced almost $3 million being doled out to 28 states to tackle veteran homelessness in rural areas. Arizona is one of them.

In total money awarded, Arizona was only behind California and New York, with HUD giving $224,000 to local public-housing agencies.

The Flagstaff and Cochise County Housing Authorities partnered with Northern and Southern Arizona Healthcare Systems to receive a total of 28 housing vouchers for homeless veterans in rural areas.

The Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program has been in place since 2008, and gives rental assistance combined with case management and clinical services provided by VA.
