The State Board for Charter Schools on Monday heard presentations from several charter schools that missed this year’s financial audit deadline.

The board voted unanimously to give three of the schools more time to submit their audit rather than voting to revoke the school’s charter. The fourth had declared bankruptcy, but its charter also was not revoked.

One charter holder, called StrengthBuilding, missed the deadline two years in a row.

Board President Kathy Senseman says the board’s decision to give them more time isn’t unusual.

“You know there’s usually a handful every year of audit issues," she said. "We had one that was a bankruptcy issue. Many times it’s a legitimate reasons of why that comes up. We have over 500 schools so to have only a handful that have an audit issue, that’s good.”

She said the board tries to understand occasional problems.

“The good news is we don’t have a lot of repeat offenders, so I see that as a success for the board," Senseman said. "Things happen, out there in the business world. We try to hold them to their contracts but also have an understanding that things happen in the real world.”

The schools have 10 percent of their state funding withheld per month until they submit the audit.
